The Ten Gods (Shi Shen): Understanding Relationships in Ba Zi
The Ten Gods system maps how every element in your chart relates to your Day Master. It reveals your talents, challenges, relationships, and life patterns.
What Are the Ten Gods?
The Ten Gods (十神, shi shen) are the classification system that gives Ba Zi its analytical depth. Once you know your Day Master, every other Heavenly Stem in your chart falls into one of ten categories based on two factors:
- Elemental relationship — does it produce, control, drain, support, or match your Day Master?
- Polarity — is it the same polarity (Yang-Yang or Yin-Yin) or opposite (Yang-Yin)?
These ten categories are not abstract labels. Each one describes a specific type of energy, relationship, or life domain.

How to Read the Ten Gods in a Chart
The Ten Gods appear not just as the Heavenly Stems you can see, but also within the hidden stems of each Earthly Branch. A chart might show no visible Wealth star in the stems, but have several hidden in the branches.
Key reading principles:
Position matters. A Ten God in the Year Pillar relates to ancestors, grandparents, or early life. In the Month Pillar, it relates to parents, career, and the primary life phase. In the Hour Pillar, it relates to children, later life, and inner desires.
Strength matters. A Ten God that is well-supported by the season and other elements functions positively. One that is isolated or clashing may create friction.
Combinations matter. Certain Ten Gods interact in powerful ways. The classic pairing of Qi Sha (Seven Killings) with Shi Shen (Eating God) is called “Eating God Controls Killings” — it transforms dangerous pressure into disciplined power.
Beyond the Basics
The Ten Gods are the vocabulary of Ba Zi interpretation. Without them, a chart is just eight characters. With them, those characters become a narrative of personality, relationships, career tendencies, and timing.
As you study further, you will encounter Ten God structures (ge ju) — specific configurations that define the dominant theme of a chart. These structures, combined with the dynamic flow of Luck Pillars, form the advanced layer of Ba Zi reading.
